How Do You Get Rid of Mosquitoes in the House?

Did you know that there are more insects on Earth than humans? For those who are interested in the numbers, it’s estimated that there are ten quintillion insects at any given time. In contrast, the world population is only 7.8 billion.

Fortunately, most of these bugs are harmless. With that said, there are some that can pose a threat. Take ticks, for example—they can cause Lyme disease.

Mosquitoes are harmful as well. Similar to ticks, they’re capable of transmitting diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and dengue.

How Do Mosquitoes Find Us?

Mosquitoes in the House

Mosquitoes use several methods to locate potential hosts. For one thing, they’re attracted by the odor of carbon dioxide—the gas that we breathe out. They’re capable of sensing it up to 160 feet away.

That’s not all. Mosquitoes also have receptors that’ll pick up on cues such as sweat and body heat.

Why Can’t We Feel Them?

Mosquitoes are sneaky. Nine times out of ten, you won’t feel anything when you’re being bitten. It isn’t until after it starts to itch, that you notice you’ve fallen victim to their blood-sucking tendencies.

One of the reasons why you don’t feel it right away is because they excrete a tiny amount of anesthetic in their saliva. Their size also plays a role—that is, they’re so small that it’s hard to feel them when they bite us!

Symptoms of a Mosquito Bite

More often than not, a soft bump will appear minutes after the bite. Not only will it be red, but it’ll also be itchy.

In some cases, there might also be swelling, small blisters, or dark spots. Individuals with weakened immune systems may experience other symptoms such as swollen lymph glands and low-grade fever.

Rarely, it can cause anaphylaxis—a potentially life-threatening condition.

How Do You Get Rid of Mosquitoes In The House?

There are several ways that you can get rid of these blood-sucking insects. Here are a few things that you might want to consider.
You Get Rid of Mosquitoes In The House

1. Eliminate Standing Water

One of the best things that you can do to protect yourself against mosquitoes is to eliminate standing water. After all, that’s where they lay their eggs.

For example, don’t leave items in the yard that can collect water. Make sure to change the water regularly if you have a birdbath.

By removing their breeding spot, you’ll be able to prevent future mosquito problems.

2. Plant Mosquito-Repelling Plants

There are certain plants that’ll naturally repel mosquitoes. Some examples include lavender, marigold, citronella, lemon balm, basil, rosemary, catnip, peppermint, and bee balm.

Plant them around the perimeter of your house, and chances are, you won’t get as many visitors. As an extra bonus, it’ll also add some beauty to your home!

3. Set Mosquito Traps

There are various mosquito traps that you can buy in stores. If you want, you can also create your own.

It’s easy—start by cutting the top off of a 1L soda bottle. Invert the top section and place it into the body of the bottle. From there, secure the funnel with duct tape.

Next, make the mosquito bait. Dissolve 1/4 cup of brown sugar in 1 cup of boiling water and let it cool. Mix in a bit of yeast and pour the mixture into the bottle.

Once you’ve done that, all you have to do is set out the trap.

4. Light Candles

You can repel mosquitoes by lighting certain candles; the scent will be enough to keep them away. Take citronella candles, for example—they’re known for repelling mosquitoes.

Other effective scents include lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, clove, and lemongrass. For the best results, light the candles in an area with no moving air.

5. Install Mesh Screens

Want to open the windows but don’t want to let the mosquitoes in? Consider installing a mesh screen. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy fresh air without having to worry about being bitten.

In fact, you can use them with doors as well. If anything, it’s one of the best ways to prevent mosquitoes from entering the house.

6. Use Fans

Believe it or not, but you can actually repel mosquitoes by using a fan. How does it work? The moving air makes it more difficult for them to fly.

In fact, studies have shown that using a fan can reduce mosquito landings by up to 65 percent.

Not only that, but it also helps to disperse the carbon dioxide that you exhale. In other words, they won’t be able to find you as easily.

7. Burn Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds are not only great as fertilizer, but you can also use them to repel mosquitoes. For the best results, burn the grounds like incense—that will intensify the smell for these household bugs.

Aside from the smell, the smoke will also cause them to scatter. It’s not just effective for mosquitoes either—it’ll also repel other critters such as wasps and slugs.
