Even if you don’t live in a particularly hot climate, most likely there are at least a few weeks each summer that are stifling. We all know there’s nothing worse than feeling hot and bothered at home, but you might not have the means (or find it necessary) to kit out your property with AC, new windows or other more expensive methods to keep it cool. If so, you dont have to suffer as there are some practical and inexpensive ways you can make things more comfortable. Here are some ideas!

A fan

You don’t necessarily need air conditioning to keep cool on hot days, fans really can be effective. The thing to remember here is that fans cool people, not rooms. This means you won’t drop the temperature of the room by having the fan running, but if you let it blow onto you it can reduce your body temperature. A good rule of thumb is to buy two fans, one for your living space downstairs where it can be positioned in front of your seating area. And another for upstairs where it can be put near your bed to cool you at night.

Window treatments

The right window treatments in your home can make such a difference. In the summer, the correct type of window dressings will help to keep your rooms cool without blocking out too much light, and can prevent insects and pests from getting in too. Often the best way to go about things is to add blinds, curtains and quality window screens to the windows in the main rooms you sit in. That way you can easily adjust the light levels, temperature and protect against insects as and when you need to. On very hot days you could close either the blinds, screens and curtains or whichever combination you need. Other days, you might just need the blinds or a quality window screen depending on the temperature and how bright it is. It’s an easy way to keep your home comfortable during the summer months, and doesnt require a huge amount of money or renovation.

Bedding

Sleep is so important to our mental and physical health, so providing yourself with the right environment to get restful sleep is one of the best things you can do for yourself and for your home. When it’s especially warm, we can struggle to fall asleep since our body temperature naturally needs to drop as part of the winding down process. With this being said, you probably arent used to sleeping with no covers at all so finding something that’s lightweight and gives you some coverage without trapping too much body heat is key. Store away thick winter duvets and invest in a thinner variety, or some simple sheets or thin covers. Materials like cotton and bamboo are best since they’re light, breathable and will help to draw moisture (and therefore heat) away from your skin.
