5 Top Things to Put on Your Household Maintenance Checklist

Is your home in need of some attention? Need help keeping it both functional and aesthetically pleasing? Wondering what household maintenance entails?

Then read on. These are the top 5 things to put on your household maintenance checklist.

1. Vacuum

Perhaps the most important aspect of home maintenance is vacuuming. Not only does vacuuming provide a home with a cleaner and less cluttered look, but it also prevents the influx of mice, ants, and other pests. Not to mention, it staves off allergens.

You should be vacuuming your home a minimum of once a week. Note, though, that if you have cats or dogs, bi-weekly vacuuming sessions might be needed. Make sure to vacuum the floors, the furniture, and the air vents.

2. Dust

While vacuuming is probably the most important aspect of home maintenance, dusting isn’t far behind.

Dusting is vital not only to the aesthetics of a home but to a home’s air quality as well.

Dusting doesn’t have to be as frequent as vacuuming. Generally speaking, a monthly dusting session will suffice. When dusting, make sure to get every surface, including those that are above your line of sight.

3. Inspect for Leaks

When it comes to home damage, few entities are as feared as moisture. Water damage can cause both mild and severe damage, and, in most cases, does its bidding silently. As such, it can wreak havoc for months without you ever even noticing.

Because of this, you need to inspect for leaks on a regular basis. Make your rounds at least once a week, checking on your sinks, your toilets, your bathtubs, your refrigerators, your windows, and your dishwasher. Check your basement as well, as groundwater can easily leak through basement walls and lead to mold growth.

If you notice any leaks whatsoever, you’re advised to bring in a plumber. Find out more now.

4. Test Your Detectors

Your home is supposed to be a safe place. But if its safety detectors aren’t operational, it can turn into a dangerous place at a moment’s notice. As such, you need to test your safety detectors at least once a month.
Test Your Detectors
You should have both fire detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Go ahead and push their testing buttons to ensure that they’re still beeping. And after around 6 months have passed, change their batteries.

5. Check the Exterior

The exterior of your home is important as well. If its siding and roofing aren’t intact, it could become exposed to water. And if it becomes exposed to water, it could suffer substantial damage.

For this reason, you need to give the exterior of your home the once-over at least once a week. Keep an eye out for missing panels, warping, cracking, and other forms of wear and tear.
