Waterproofing for Your House

Everyone has a dream of owning a house one day and witnessing the foundation of your house getting laid and taking shape in front of you. But, what if something went wrong and all your foundation is filled with water due to bad waterproofing

It weakens the whole structure of the house, causing problems in the long run and ultimately affecting the life of the overall construction. This blog is a one-stop solution for how to waterproof your property by different types of waterproofing.

It will guide you through all the types of waterproofing to help you find the best waterproofing for your house and will also help you choose the right type for every part of your house.

Waterproofing in Different parts of your house:

1. Foundation waterproofing:

Other than burning down the house, the worst thing that can happen to your house is a foundation problem. Foundation is on which the whole house is standing and if there is a problem in it then you might be at loss. And the source of water in the foundation is mainly the underground water. And mainly the foundation is waterproofed using the concrete and just you have to make sure that the concrete wall is strong and made properly because any cracks in the concrete wall can cause your foundation to fill with water and hence causing a lot of damage to your dream house in the long run.

2. Roof /Terrace

Roof Terrace

Waterproofing terraces and roofs can prove to be a complicated concern for the house because the entire area is mostly flat and doesn’t have a slope for water to drain. Accumulated water in a specific area can do serious damage to your house if that area is not waterproofed effectively.

There are two common waterproofing membranes that can be used for the waterproofing of the roof and terrace are

  • sheet-based membrane
  • liquid membrane.

The use of sheet membrane waterproofing is recommended because these are continuous materials laid over flat surfaces. The continuity of the membranes prevents any seepage of water to enter.

Torch-on Membrane Proofing is a type of sheet membrane that comes on large rolls of polymer modified membranes – primarily made of crude oil-based hydrocarbon, bitumen, which is modified with asphalt. The asphalt used can either be Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS), which is rubber modified, or Atactic Polypropylene Plastic (APP), which is plastic modified asphalt.

By heating the membrane on the surface that requires waterproofing, it can be applied on a flat surface.

APP and SBS application both have their pros and cons:

  • APP – quick installation and easily heated; hardwearing and less flexible
  • SBS – longer life and greater flexibility ; takes longer to install and heat

But the main plus point of torch membrane is it is non-toxic and mostly used in market of waterproofing Sydney.

3. Basement

The most common method to waterproof your basement used is tanking of basement.

The most popular material used for this work used is Mastic Asphalt, and sometimes there are other types of bituminous materials that are also used for the tanking of the basement.

4. Kitchen and bathroom waterproofing

Kitchen and bathroom waterproofing

Cementitious waterproofing is the most effective and easiest method of waterproofing in bathrooms and kitchens because these are most effective in the internal wet areas.

Supplies that are required for the cementitious waterproofing are easily available from the suppliers and are easily mixed and used. This method is a rigid or semi-flexible type of waterproofing, but as it is only applied to internal wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens and it doesn’t get any direct sunlight or faces any other weather condition, it does not go through contract and expansion process.

5. Garden and swimming pool

A swimming pool is a great accessory for your garden. But most people avoid building one because it gets damaged over the course of time due to the aggressive action of chlorine. If you want your swimming pools to last long, you have to make them waterproof. When building a pool, it is critical to build your swimming pool water. If you want to waterproof your swimming pool, it is recommended to use epoxy- cement as the create a strong barrier against the counter-pressure of flowing water and works as a resistant layer. The protection of buildings from the damages caused by water is very important for their “health”. It is also important to waterproof the horizontal and vertical surfaces of swimming pools and ponds to protect all sides

6. Waterproofing areas in the houses with wiring of electricity

Waterproofing is a very important thing when it comes to the places where there are electricity wires around because water can short circuit the wires and start a fire in the house. That is one of the many reasons why the trend of waterproofing the wires has also changed in the 2000s because people now know the importance of waterproof wiring. Like electricians in Sydney are especially hired with the waterproofing companies for the job of waterproofing houses in Sydney nowadays.
