Wellness is the pursuit of holistic health involving making positive changes to the way you live. It is multi-dimensional, requiring social, environmental, physical and mental changes to improve overall health and wellbeing.

Bedrooms are a place for reflection, relaxation and rest, so it makes perfect sense to make changes here. Natural materials are one of the best ways to achieve wellness because they increase pleasant feelings and reduce stress.

This article will discuss how to achieve wellness in your bedroom with natural materials, so you can make positive changes to the way you live.

Natural paints

If you are decorating, use natural paints. Natural paints are made from biodegradable materials like plant extracts, linseed oil, earth minerals and mineral pigments. You can get natural wall and ceiling paint and paint for wood and metal.

Natural paints are eco-friendly, non-toxic and free from VOCs (volatile organic compounds), so they do not pollute the air, creating a healthier bedroom.

Natural mattress

Natural mattresses are filled with natural fillings like cotton, wool, and bamboo, which are sustainable and hypoallergenic.

Hypoallergenic mattresses have an outer cover so tightly woven that allergens like pet dander, dust, mites and skin cells cannot penetrate them.

This not only makes cleaning easy but also prevents allergens from building up.

Natural mattresses last just as long as regular mattresses and are eco-friendlier, so they are an excellent choice for sustainable living.

Vegetable textiles

Vegetable textiles are substitutes for synthetic fabrics, boasting a lower carbon footprint with no toxic chemicals used to make them.

Textile fibres include sisal, bamboo, linen, lyocell and hemp. Linen is an excellent choice for bedding and sheets, while sisal is perfect for weaved furnishings.

Look for vegetable textiles and other plant-based textiles as a replacement for polyester and polypropylene to furnish your bedroom in an eco-friendly, healthy way.

Plants

Nature reduces anger, fear and stress, and looking after a plant, tree or shrub and watching it flourish one of life’s greatest pleasures.

Whether we’re talking about houseplants, flowers or bonsai trees, anything green and living makes an enormous difference to the feel of bedrooms.

You can grow chillies and herbs or get a flowering cactus that blooms in summer, but our favourite idea is bonsai trees. Bonsai trees live for more than fifty years and need caring to flourish, creating a personal connection to your bedroom.

Air purification

Achieving a high state of wellness requires healthy living, and one of the simplest ways to improve health in your bedroom is with an air purifier.

Air purifiers have a natural activated carbon filter and a HEPA filter. Activated carbon effectively removes odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), while the HEPA filter will remove dust mites, mould spores, pollen, and pet dander.

Natural flooring

If you need a new carpet, choose sisal weave carpet or coir carpet. Coir carpet is attractive because it’s made from coconut husk fibres softened in seawater. Sisal is made from the stem of the Agave sisalana plant native to southern Mexico.

If you want a hard floor, hardwood is always a good choice, or you can go for softwood like pine. Solid bamboo flooring is another good option, or you can go for a natural stone floor (Kota stone is one of our favourites).

Lime plaster

Lime plaster is breathable and controls moisture very well, making it an ideal substitute for gypsum plaster in bedrooms. It’s more eco-friendly than gypsum plaster because the lime is biodegradable, making it more eco-friendly.

Lime plasterers are hard to come by these days because of the widespread adoption of gypsum plaster and drywall. However, sourcing lime plaster is worth it because it contains no toxic substances or chemicals to mess with your health.
