1. Give Away One Item Each Day

Instead of tackling your decluttering project over the span of a few days or weeks, give one item away every day. In the beginning, this is going to feel like nothing, but at the end of the year, you’ll have 365 less items in your home!
Or, another way to tackle decluttering in parts is by using trash bags. Whenever you feel the urge, grab one trash bag and fill it with items you don’t need. Don’t stop until the trash bag is full.
2. Do the Hanger Experiment
While Oprah didn’t come up with this idea, she did help give it some attention. And if it’s good enough for Oprah, it’s good enough for anyone, right?
This idea is particularly great for those who have trouble parting with clothing articles. The idea is this:
- Hang all of your clothes in reverse order
- After wearing a piece, return it to the closet, this time facing the correct direction
- After 6 months of doing this, take a look
This will give you a clear picture of what clothes you can discard. And while this experiment works great with clothes, it could apply to a number of areas in your home. (tools, makeup, craft items, toys, etc.)
3. Four Box Method
While this approach takes a little longer, it is one of the most tried and true methods for decluttering your home.
First, you’ll gather up four boxes. Then, you’ll pick one room in your home to start with. The four boxes will each have a separate designation: keep, trash, donate, or relocate.
Each item in your home needs to be placed in one of these categories. While this may seem overly tedious, this method does really help you take stock into what you have in your home, what your spending money on, and what you simply don’t need.

4. Change Perspective
You spend time in your home nearly every day, and sometimes, this can cloud your judgment of how cluttered it actually is.
If you need a kick in the pants to actually start decluttering, it can help to switch your perspective. Take a picture of each room in your house, and think to yourself, “If I walked into another home that looked like this, what would my impressions be?”
Or, invite someone over you wouldn’t feel comfortable seeing your home as a mess, such as your boss. This can really kick you into gear to get the decluttering process moving.
