Tips and Tricks for Cleaning Clogged Drains at Home

The causes of household drain clogging are quite common because it mostly happens due to food products finding its way into the drain through kitchen sinks, grease, and oil accumulation from kitchen products and sometimes from chemical concentration from household cleaners. There would also be occasions when hair, toilet paper, and other solid objects can reach the toilet drain and block it. Barring the last instance, when you must call a plumber in Richardson TX in most other cases, you can try out some conventional cleaning techniques to clear clogged drains. Although there is no surety about your success, there is no harm in trying because the sooner you act; the higher are the chances of success.

Hot water to your rescue

The sludge that builds up inside pipes is the cause of clogging drains and prevents sludge buildup. It is better to try to keep drains clean by flushing it with hot water periodically. Hot water helps to dislodge the particles sticking to the inside surface of the pipes, which then flow out, thereby avoiding the chances of forming solid sludge that can clog the drain. Applying hot water under slight pressure works best to clear blocked pipes.

Use the tools you have

It is hard to find any home that does not have a plunger, the most versatile household plumbing tool. Make good use of the plunger in the bathroom to fix some problems with the drain, which might either be performing poorly or have become completely clogged.

The plunger is the perfect tool for cleaning sink drains, but it is a special sink plunger and not the ordinary plunger you see in the bathroom. All plungers work in the same way that you must cover the drain opening with the plunger and keep pressing it up and down for 1-2 minutes, but be careful not to press down the plunger too hard, which can jam it. The plunger’s movement builds up pressure within the fluid that forces the sludge to move away from its position and clear the path for water to flow.

Use a bent wire hanger.

If you do not have any plumbing tool near at hand, you can make one from your coat hangers, after straightening the hanger bend one end of the wire to form a hook that you can send inside the drain to pull out accumulated waste inside the drain. When you feel that you have cleared most of the sludge flush with hot water, check if the flow has improved.

Use toilet bombs

9 tablespoons liquid dish detergent, ¼ cup Epsom salt, and 2 cups baking soda is the perfect ingredient for making toilet bobs to clear drain clogs, including those that are very stubborn. To make the bomb, use a muffin tin lined with muffin liners and pour the mixture described above into the muffin liners using a scoop and allowing it to dry up overnight. To clear a clogged drain, place a bomb in the toilet, pour 5 cups of hot water and wait for 4 hours before flushing away the clog to clear the drain.
