Home security has always been a concern, but it’s even more essential in a world where everyone has thousands of dollars worth of gadgets at home. The idea of a “smart home” has led to everything from smart cameras and doorbells. Now Ajax Alarm Systems creates the first truly integrated smart alarm system.

The Ajax alarm system includes over two dozen items including cameras, sirens, sensors, a control panel, and more. Given the complex and all-encompassing nature of these systems, they can be expensive and can only be installed by professionals, but the peace of mind is worth the cost.

Design and Features

Most Ajax products are in either black or white. They all have sleek and modern designs that look like they belong in a futuristic smart home. The Smart Hub is the core of the system. The hub features an ethernet socket, power connection, and 2 SIM card slots. This smart hub connects to up to 100 devices across 50 rooms and accommodates up to 50 users.

The touch keypad is the other integral part of the system. The backlit keyboard lights up in use, otherwise it sits there looking fancy waiting for someone to pick it up. The rest of the system has a similar modern design, including the indoor siren and smoke detector.

Speaking of the Ajax smoke detector, it has everything you’d expect from a smoke detector and a little bit more. There’s an anti-tamper warning and an alert for rising temperatures. The system also works without being connected to the Hub, keeping you safe in the event of a connection drop. Most Ajax devices feature similar temperature sensors and tamper-proofing.

The motion sensor alarm is a genius piece of technology. The alarm includes a photo alarm where it automatically takes up to five pictures of whatever, or whoever, set it off. The system also has pet immunity features, meaning it can’t be triggered by pets under 20kg.

Proprietary Communications

The glue holding all these features together is the propetairy Jeweller communication protocol. The communication protocol ensures that the system has secure communications up to 2000mtrs. The batteries in the system last for between five and seven years.

Jeweller automatically encrypts any data that passes through its system. The encryption ensures that system communications can’t be hacked or spoofed for total coverage. The protocol even automatically switches frequencies if someone does try to get into the system or disrupt communications. The two extra SIM slots give the system a total of three ways to contact you in the event of an emergency.

The motion sensor alarms have another unique communication protocol. This protocol, dubbed Wings, has dedicated antenna built into the smart hub. The Wings protocol ensures that pictures are sent to the Hub even with an unstable connection.

Installation

Ajax Systems offer high-end security. This comes with a downside, in that it is impossible to buy them and install them yourself. The Ajax website connects you with licensed and professional installers.

The good news is that setting up and using the app that controls the system couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is install the app and create your account. From there, you can create the rooms and assign the different components to different tasks. You won’t need to have a lot of tech experience to control everything. Simply scan the QR code on the device and follow the onscreen instructions to set them up and start protecting yourself.

After adding all the devices to the security network, you can start working on configuring them all. The default settings are often more than enough, but it’s good to double check and ensure there’s nothing else you need. You might be surprised by what you can do.

The Smart Hub alone has several settings to play with. From here, you can add and remove users, change the network connection and connect to a different wireless network, create a Geofence for your property so the app reminds you to arm and disarm your alarm when you pass. Create a schedule to automate tasks to make things even easier on yourself. You can also divide the property into different areas and assing each area unique settings. The last thing worth mentioning in the plethora of Hub settings is having the option to assign a security company or monitoring station to the system, if you have a security company monitoring your system from the outside for you.

Some devices on the network have their own unique settings. For example, the MotionCam lets you adjust the image resolution and sensitivity. Most of the devices offer some time delay between leaving and activation and when to send alert messages. Users can configure the panic button to automatically arm the system or to sound the alarm. Users can adjust the volume and frequency of the indoor siren as well as connect it to LED lighting. Given that the default setting is over 100 decibels, you might want to turn it down just a little to avoid waking up the whole street if something happens.

Ajax offers just about every setting you could imagine. There’s even some settings you might not have considered. Be sure to poke through the settings and see what’s on offer.
