Basic Steps of Upholstery Cleaning 3

Like most other parts of your house, furniture needs regular care and cleaning to keep it serving you for a long time. Permanent stains have, however, been a menace to most furniture owners for a while now.

Stains on the couch can get difficult to remove, especially those made from fine fabric upholstery. To help you keep your furniture looking and feeling new, here are a few steps you can follow to ensure you get rid of those stubborn stains.

The Right Steps for Perfect Upholstery Cleaning

Have a Look at the Instructions

Most furniture and upholstery makers provide a hidden tag with instructions on how to care for your furniture. The tag also contains cleaning and storage instructions. There are different cleaning codes for different upholstery materials.

Code W indicates that you can clean the fabric using a water-based solvent.

Code WS indicates mild detergent and steam

Code X indicates dry cleaning only

Code S means you can only use a dry cleaning detergent

Be sure to look at these instructions before you embark on your upholstery cleaning mission, as you could end up damaging the fabric.

Vacuum the Furniture

Before you clean your furniture, it is important to remove all the loose debris that might be stuck in the fabric. Therefore, make sure you remove all the cushions and their covers and store them in a clean place to prevent them from collecting more dirt and debris.

Proceed to vacuum the fabric using the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. The brush will loosen any remaining debris to make it easier to clean.

Clean the Non-Fabric Parts of the Furniture

Although the wooden and metal parts of the furniture also attract dirt, they are much easier and faster to clean than the fabric. Most people, therefore, tend to overlook this step and get to the hard work faster.

Skipping this step might put your fabric at the risk of developing another stain when it comes in contact with dirty parts.

Deal With the Fabric Stain

There are many ways to clean out stains from fabric. Many people prefer to purchase fabric cleaning solutions, although you could also use a few homemade remedies.

For fine fabric upholstery, you can use a mixture of warm water, vinegar, and castile soap. Use a spray bottle to evenly moist the stained area with the mixture. You can then begin scrubbing the area of focus using a soft textured cloth until the stain disappears.

Dry the Couch

After thorough upholstery cleaning, many people tend to let excess water soak in. This might harm the wood or metal parts of the furniture. It is important to let the sofa dry out naturally after absorbing the excess water using a towel for best results.

Summing It Up

A dirty sofa doesn’t sit well with most owners or visitors, for that matter. As they might be difficult to clean, most people would rather replace the fabric or remove the furniture once it accumulates too many stains.

So, make sure you clean your fabric regularly to keep it looking good for longer.
