Chain link fence installation — A beginner’s guide

Unlike other types of fences, chain link fencing is relatively easy to install. And on top of that, it requires almost no maintenance. The fence is immensely durable, withstanding extreme weather conditions and force.

So how do you go about chain link fence installation? Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Pre-installation

Before installing the fence, make sure you know the local regulations. Your neighborhood probably has a specific setback, type, and height restrictions, and you must follow these rules to avoid problems and expensive fines later.

  • Marking

Once you’ve determined the proper height and boundary for your fence, it’s time to mark its location. You should set your posts about 4 inches inside your property’s line.

  • Installation

You’ll need to install four parts for chain link fences: the terminal posts, line posts, top rail, and fence ties.

First, make sure to dig your terminal post holes about 30 inches deep. Then, you can insert the post in the center of the hole and fill it with concrete.

Next, dig your line post holes about 24 inches deep with sloping sides. Do the same as you did with the terminal posts.

Once you’ve installed your line posts, you can feed the top rail into its loop caps. And finally, hang the chain link fence fabric and fasten it with fence ties along the top rail.

Understandably, DIY installation can be a little overwhelming for the inexperienced. So if you want to ensure proper installation, hiring a fencing contractor is the way to go. Use a contractor referral service to get matched to experts in chain link fence installation who work in your area.
