Different types of boilers and prices

There are 3 main types of boilers that people usually have installed in their home. These are the combi or combination boiler, systems boilers (ones with a hot water tank) and regular boilers (these have a hot water tank and a cold water tank). Not to worry if you think some of these boilers sound more expensive than the others, they are not and are generally all the same price depending on make and model.

What is a combi boiler?

A combi boiler is a boiler that produces hot water from the boiler unit itself directly to your central heating and taps. All you need to do is turn on your heating and hot water and the combi boiler kicks and instantly starts heating up your house or water. There are no separate tanks so these are great for when space is at a premium.

What is a system boiler?

System boilers are boilers that work with a hot water cylinder. They heat up water throughout the day and store this hot water in a hot water tank ready for you to use. Don’t worry this can be quite efficient as the hot water cylinder is insulated and can keep the hot water warm for a very long time. This means that the system boiler may only have to heat your water2 or 3 times a day depending on your hot water demand.

What is a regular boiler?

A regular boiler, also known as a heat only boiler or conventional boiler, requires both a hot water tank and cold water tank. They work pretty much the same as system boilers but need this cold water tank to supply the boiler. These boilers are becoming less and less common, as a system boiler can do the same job without the cold water tank.

Where can I buy a new boiler?

You can buy a new boiler from a merchant such as plumbase or screwfix online or in store. You must ensure that you get someone who is suitably qualified to install your new boiler. They must be gas Safe registered.

How much is boiler installation?

If you are not suitably qualified to install your boiler, then you will need to pay someone to install your boiler. Generally boiler installation labour costs are between £400 and £1,000. Expect a boiler installation to take between 1 and 2 days depending on the work you have asked for.
