Sydney is Australia’s largest city. Build on low hills that surround a massive harbour, this city is stunningly beautiful and considered a great place to live.
The climate is warm and sunny for most of the year, and there are lovely rainshowers from October to March.
Unfortunately, the very weather that makes Sydney such an attractive destination is also the reason why there are so many termites in the region. What makes it worse is that there are 3 different species of termites that can wreak havoc on your property and to your home.
And three to four time a year, between November and January, these termites develop wings and swarm. And each time that they do, they build new nests. So, without termite control Sydney would not be as great a place to live!
Most Common Areas Termites Nest
The location that termites most prefer to build their nests are damp or wet areas that have a constant water supply. Root balls of trees, under houses that have plumbing or drainage problems and behind retaining walls are the places where you are most likely to find their nests.
How to Protect Your Home from Termites
Since termites thrive in dark, humid and wet places that have no airflow, here are a few things you can do to protect your home from a termite infestation:
- Keep the Sub Floor Clean
Many people end up using their sub floors as storage dumps – old and unused things are placed in cardboard boxes and are placed here. Old furniture is also stored in these spaces. These make perfect nesting grounds for those termites. The best thing you can do is clean out this space to ensure that you do not end up with a termite infestation.
- Poor Sub Floor Ventilation
One of the main reasons for termites being able to flourish in the sub floor is a lack of ventilation. Therefore, it is best if you replace your air vents with a ducted extraction fan. This can increase air flow by 100%, and when it’s airy, termites cannot survive.
- Ensure There are No Leaks
To avoid getting a termite infestation, ensure that all your pipes and drainage are leak-free. Termites love damp places, and one of the most common reasons for a termite infestation is a leaky shower. Another common reason for termite infestations is blocked a blocked drain.
If you notice any leakage, get it fixed immediately. This will not only save your home from termites, but will also help reduce your water bill.
Steps to Fix Moisture Issues Around Your Home
Here are the steps you can take to make sure your home is completely moisture free:
- Clean out all internal plumbing at least once a year.
- Hire a plumber to blast out debris from your storm pipes and drains.
- Get a termite inspection done at least once a year.
- Clean your roof gutters every 4 months.
- Ensure the air-conditioner overflow water pipe drains out into a clean drain.
- Improve the sub floor ventilation.
