If you’ve been a plant parent for some time, you’ll probably agree – having plants in your home is a no-brainer.

Since plants do so much for us, we owe it to them to make them a focal point of our decor. There are as many ways to display your plants as there are plant varieties to choose from. So, how do you choose the best way to showcase your foliage?

Since the living room is one of the areas of the home we spend the most time in, we’ve decided to focus our attention there. Keep reading to discover seven unique ways to the design ante in your living room with plants.

1. Make a Plant-a-lier

Sure, you could store your beautiful living room plants in regular flower pots. Or, you could jazz it up a bit and make your plant display a work of art.

For the artistically inclined, a “plant-a-lier” (plant chandelier) might be a fun project. You can make this as fancy or as simple as you wish. All you’ll need is plants and a wire chandelier frame or an old chandelier you can repurpose.

Consider using plants with vines or hanging foliage to make a huge statement. Your plant decoration in living room will be the talk of the town.

2. Decorative Shelves

Decorative Shelves
Whoever said plants have to resign themselves to a life of tabletops or counters? There is an infinite number of shelving options you can use to bring some life into your living room.

Want to make a huge statement? Consider purchasing (or making) your own shelves. Unique shapes are a hot trend right now. Hexagons, crescents, circles, you name it, someone’s made it. Pop a planter into these uniquely shaped shelves, and you have yourself a statement piece.

Prefer something a little less in-your-face? You can buy floating shelves online or from any hardware store. In a few minutes, you can sit back and enjoy looking at your new shelf and beautifully displayed plants.

You do need to be careful with wall shelves, though. Be sure to check the weight limits so the shelf, and your beautiful plant, don’t come crashing down.

3. Throw It Back to the ’70s

This isn’t your mother’s macrame. Or, well, maybe it is. Macrame was a massive trend in the 1970s, but it recently has made a comeback. Artisans all over the world are again weaving these knotty wall hangings and planters.

If you didn’t save your vintage macrame, don’t worry. It’s incredibly easy to get your hands on some again.

If you’re the DIY type, you can try reading books or watching videos on how to macrame. When you make your own, you can choose how tall you want it to be, how many pots you want it to hold, and what it looks like.

Prefer not to use your precious time weaving? You can buy these gorgeous planters online for a fair price or even custom order some from local artisans.

4. Stick It in the Corner

Stick It in the Corner
Just because nobody puts baby in the corner doesn’t mean that plants don’t deserve to be there. If you have the space, dedicate an entire corner of your living room to your green babies.

If you have an end table, you can place it in the corner and put a plant pot right on top of it. Great small plant options include cacti, aloe, jade plants or succulents.

If you want a more significant “wow factor,” consider purchasing a tall plant to take up space in your corner. These require large pots and no tabletop at all. Some large indoor plants for living room to consider yucca, kentia palm, ficus or dracaena.

5. Ladder Stand

A ladder stand is an excellent investment if you’re really committed to the idea of plants in living room. They are an effective way of showcasing several plants all at once.

If you don’t have a lot of plants to display, that’s ok. These stands are versatile. You can use them to store other trinkets, picture frames, or even books. As a bonus, they add a chic rustic touch to your decor.

If you’re a whiz with power tools, a ladder stand is a straightforward DIY task that you can tackle on the weekend. Of course, if you prefer not to try the DIY route, you can get them online for a very fair price.

6. Channel the Tropics

Are you hoping to bring a little slice of the Caribbean into your living room decor? Tropical plants can make your home feel like paradise, all while providing a series of health benefits.
These types of plants can absorb dangerous chemicals that might be lurking in your air. A study from NASA found that they can reduce pollutants like benzene and formaldehyde from the air.

Benzene is a solvent found in gasoline, oil, and paint. Formaldehyde is a strong-smelling gas that’s found in some pieces of furniture, foam insulation and the backing of carpets. Both of these pollutants can cause harmful side effects like headaches, appetite loss, throat irritation, and nausea.

Some common tropical plants to consider are the peace lily, birds of paradise, and bromeliads. Not only can they rid your air of harmful toxins, but they bring with them a warm environment and friendly atmosphere to your living room.

As a bonus, many tropical plants are straightforward to care for. Brown thumbs unite!

7. Terrariums

Terrariums
Terrariums are a unique way of displaying your indoor plants on tabletops or counters. The great thing this type of display is that they’re easy to take care of. Even those with the brownest of thumbs will be able to keep terrarium plants alive.

To create your own, you’ll only need a glass container with a lid, rocks, moss, potting soil, activated charcoal and, of course, terrarium-friendly plants.

Start by placing about one inch worth of rocks in the bottom of your glass jar. Next, create a ring of moss around the jar with the green sides facing out. This makes a buffer between the rocks and the soil. Sprinkle a bit of activated charcoal on top of the stones to help prevent mold and bacteria from growing.

Add two inches of soil, but be careful not to bury the moss layer. Press it into place against the moss. Poke holes in the dirt with your finger. This is where you’ll place your plants.
Carefully remove your plants, roots and all, and place into the divots you made with your finger.

There are several different plants you can use in your terrarium. Anything from friendship plants to starship flower cacti to ferns will work. The best indoor ferns for terrariums are east Indian holly and button ferns.
