The Benefits of a Whole House Purifier

Using an air purifier can have a dramatic impact on the quality of air within your home, inviting you to enjoy purer, fresher air which is free from toxins and contaminants. Air purifiers can help to remove dust, allergens and other potential pollutants from the air in your home and can be a huge benefit to those suffering from allergies or asthma.

To get the best from your air purifier, it is essential that you choose the right unit for your needs – there are a variety of different kinds, each for a different purpose. Many opt for portable options, which can be quickly moved about and set in in different areas of the home according to your preferences. For a more permanent solution, however, it is worth considering a whole house purifier.

What Is The Difference?

While a portable unit is one which can be taken and transported, a whole house air purifier is fixed in one place. The most common solution is to filter the air through the existing forced-air heating or central air-conditioning system. The filters are built into the return-air ductwork, and they trap particles, contaminants, and possible triggers as the air passes through the filter.

One advantage of these systems is their passive nature; they can constantly filter air throughout the house the whole time the fan is running. There are four main types of whole-house filters:

  • Flat filters

If your home possesses a forced-air furnace, it will be far easier to install an air filtration system. The critical thing to remember here is to change the matted-fiberglass filter at least once a month, if not more. The purpose of these filters is to protect the furnace from dust; they cannot block the microscopic particles which air purifiers catch.

Instead, try a pleated filter for a better job. These use more material in the same space, and many are electrostatically charged which helps them attract particles such as pollen and pet hair.

  • Extended media filters

An extended media filter looks like eight or so inches of furnace filters. They contain a pile of filtration media, making them more effective than regular fiberglass filters. The key issue with these is that they require expert installation, as the filter holder needs to be plumbed directly into the ductwork.

  • Electronic filters

Like extended media filters, these are also plumbed into the ductwork, though they are far more high-tech. As the air passes through the screen, a high-voltage current puts an electrical charge on any particles collected. At the other end of the unit, oppositely charged collector plates grab the particles like a magnet.

This option is particularly useful on smoke particles, which are often too small to be absorbed in media filters. Another bonus is that they never need replacing, but the aluminum collector plates must be soaked in soapy water every few months.

  • Ultraviolet filters

Perfect for those concerned about germs, ultraviolet filters can zap any airborne bacteria and viruses – for this reason, they are popular in hospitals.

Investing in a whole house air purifier can be an easy way to take care of your health and comfort within your home, and can protect the entire family.
