How To Distinguish Antiques From Junk

To decorate the interior (and, perhaps, get rich) simply by disassembling the mezzanine is quite real

Our grandparents did not throw anything away. What could be repaired was repaired, and what could not be was hidden in a far corner: suddenly it would come in handy? Thanks to this habit, you can still find antique dishes, clocks or furniture in many apartments today. The fate of such items is usually unenviable: “unfashionable” plates are sent to the trash, dilapidated chairs – to the cottage or garage. And what if all this stuff from grandma’s trunk is not garbage at all, but old things “at an incredible price”? Try to look at them with a new look! Even the Antiques for sale is available on Real Rare Antiques from where you can buy such old things.

How to understand antiques

First of all, let’s understand the terms. There is a joke that antiques are things that you forgot to throw away before they rose in price. But not every old thing can be called antique – a number of signs will be required.

Age

For Russian silver, this is 50 years or more. Although, for example, for European silver, the age limits are much stricter: there, things made before 1830 are considered antique. Unique things of later silver that are from 15 to 50 years old are vintage. On the Antique Marketplace Antiqon you can find anything you like, for sure.

Rarity

The fewer such items on the market, the higher they are valued: for example, furniture in the Stalinist Empire style is often more expensive than items of the XIX century – simply because in those years high-quality furniture was produced in small editions. Such antique items are called rarities; there are also unique ones – they exist in a single copy.

Material and spiritual value. Some antique items are made of expensive materials: covered with gold or decorated with precious stones. For example, you can find (seldom and it will be a great luck!)  a chair from a flea market, the armrests of which would be inlaid with small rubies. The second important aspect is cultural significance: some things are especially valued because they reflect the tastes and trends of the time.

Antique silver

Silver has been in use since ancient times. A metal that combines nobility, aristocracy and dignity. In Babylon and Assyria, it was considered a symbol of the moon. Therefore, poets call it “pure”, “white”. Many peoples treated antique silver with reverence, believing that they were made of divine material. Medical and protective amulets, dishes, accessories were made. It was believed that silver jugs and cups disinfect drinks, you can safely drink from them without fear of deadly cholera or other infectious disease. Getting older, silver becomes even more attractive. It costs more because the cultural and historical value of antiques increases with age. It is amazing that the most common objects (writing instrument, casket, compact, mirror) can be traced as artistic tastes changed and jewelry skills improved. Therefore, antique silverware is in great demand at auctions, as  not only state museums are trying to replenish their collections, but also people who have fallen under the magic of the lunar metal.

Antique silver is a profitable long–term investment. The presence of a sample or personal stamp of the jeweler who made the product on the jewelry or other object significantly increases the cost. It is not for nothing that antique silver is highly valued in the antique market, collectors and history lovers are really hunting for it.
