You can extend the life of your rain gutters by keeping them in good shape with periodic maintenance. Steel and aluminium gutters can last for 20 years. Downspouts—which are less abused than gutters and therefore tend to last longer (up to 30 years)—require only periodic maintenance from homeowners in order for that length of the time interval between replacements.

While it is true that gutter maintenance requires a person to climb up onto the roofline, this is generally not difficult or dangerous. Clean out debris and make sure water flows through the system effectively by inspecting your gutters twice a year.

When conducting a gutter inspection, you may find maintenance issues such as rust, holes or leaky joints. Most of these problems can be resolved yourself at home with a few simple tricks.

Gutter Problems 1

Rust

If you have gutters made of galvanized steel, it may be time to replace them and prevent future damage. Rust is a common issue that can plague anyone. Sometimes the aluminium gutter repair is necessary. But most rust damage can be repaired by either removing it with a wire brush and then applying primer. Let’s take a look at how you can repair your rust damage and protect the rest of your ride from further rusting.

Holes

Rust corrosion caused by water in galvanized steel gutters can make holes in the metal, which will leak. Aluminium is often used to replace steel gutters because it resists rust, but it is soft and can be pierced by nails or screws if not installed correctly. First, clean and dry the hole. Then spread roofing cement around the edges of the hole. Next, apply a patch of appropriately sized metal flashing over the cement.

Leaks

If you live in an area where precipitation is rare, or if you tend to water irrigate your property, it can be difficult to detect small leaks from deteriorating gutter seals and seams.
To repair a leak, you’ll have to apply another bead of gutter sealant. This product can be found at most hardware stores and is easy to use. You simply have to follow the directions on the product, which will tell you how much you need to buy and where to place it. Remember to thoroughly clean and dry any areas where you’ll be applying roofing cement or gutter sealant, and these repairs should go smoothly.
