Most people associate a fireplace with warmth, cosiness and aesthetics. Nevertheless, many households now forego the pleasant heating with their fireplace during winter because they are eco-conscious. But we have good news: heating and environmental protection are no longer contradictory and can therefore be combined without any problems. We will show you how you can heat sustainably and cost-effectively with a fireplace and also introduce you to an eco-friendly alternative.

As we all know, eco-friendly heating is becoming more and more important. Renewable energy is becoming increasingly popular both in trade and in private households. The general goal of the energy turnaround is that, in the long term, fossil fuels should be dispensed with for heating and replaced by renewable energy sources. For this purpose, there are now numerous modern heating systems that work with soil, hydrogen, air and other renewable resources.

Bioethanol fireplaces

For some years now, bioethanol fireplaces have enjoyed increasing popularity. Nowadays, ethanol fireplaces come in all kinds of sizes and designs. But how does the chimney-free fireplace alternative work in detail?

In contrast to electric fireplaces, bioethanol fireplaces are heated with a real fire, which is created without coal or wood, but by burning the alcohol bioethanol. Bioethanol consists of 97 percent alcohol and is mainly made from plant materials.  The substance is available both in liquid form and as a gel for your fireplace.

Important: Before using a bioethanol fireplace, be sure to read the manual to avoid accidents. Basically, there are some important aspects to consider when igniting an ethanol fireplace. Among other things, you should make sure that your tank is never hot. We also recommend that you always fill your tank completely to avoid dangerous deflagration.

What to consider when buying a bioethanol fireplace?

Bioethanol fireplaces are not subject to approval. Nevertheless, we recommend that you always pay attention to the EU standard when buying an ethanol fireplace. A safe ethanol fireplace complies with DIN standard 4734-1, which you can use as a guide. However, many newer models now also have the newer DIN-EN 16647 certification, which comes from the 2016 test report. The standards ensure that certain safety precautions regarding construction, production and operational safety have been observed during manufacture and production.

Fireplaces

How much does a bioethanol fireplace cost?
The prices of ethanol fireplaces can vary greatly depending on the model. Tabletop fireplaces can be purchased for as little as €250. High-quality wall fireplaces usually start at a price of €600. If you are interested in a bioethanol freestanding fireplace, you have to expect prices from €1,100 upwards.

What is needed for a bioethanol fireplace?
To light a fire with a bioethanol fireplace, you only need the alcohol bioethanol. As a general rule, high-quality bioethanol costs about 3.30 euros per litre. For a cosy evening around your fireplace with friends, heating with bioethanol would cost approximately 6.60 euros, assuming a consumption of half a litre per hour.

Electric fireplace as another fireplace alternative

In addition to the bioethanol fireplace, there are numerous other eco-friendly fireplace alternatives. One of these is the electric fireplace. In contrast to the bioethanol fireplace, however, no real fire is created when using this alternative. Nevertheless, the diverse electronic models usually also come with the cosy fireplace romance vibes.

Conclusion

The times when fireplaces were a necessary source of fire and heat are a thing of the past. Today, fireplaces are often regarded as furniture highlights in your living room. When purchasing your fireplace, you can nowadays comfortably do without the heavy hauling of wood as well as soot and ash. Due to innovative fireplace alternatives, as already illustrated by the examples above, you as a fireplace owner can not only save costs and work, but at the same time make a significant contribution to resource-saving sustainability.
