Place Value

Place value is an important concept of the number system. The world of mathematics is wide and numbers make it even wider. May it be arithmetic, algebra, geometry, or any other field of education, the number system has its empire extended over at every step.

The most important part of the same is the place value. Though the term may look simple and precise it has an equal expansion and works like magic as a basis for mathematics. The normally used number system holds the base as 10 and is often referred to as the decimal system. Just like it, there are many others with different bases. All these number systems entitle value to the elements under some specific bases and patterns.

In this article, we will discuss the place value system. Let’s continue.

Place Value

Place value system

The place value is an important concept of the number system as under the same, every digit of every member of the decimal number system has entitled some value as per base 10 conditions. It forms the base of mathematics. Each digit in the number system is representative often of the value of the place occupied by the digit.

  • Indian place-value system: Starting from the rightmost digit we move towards the adjacent left digit for higher place values. The rightmost place is the one’s place, then the place to just left of one’s is ten’s then it’s hundreds, thousands, ten thousand, lakhs, ten lakhs and so on. This represents the Indian system of numbers. The digits are grouped as ones-tens-hundreds, thousands-ten thousands, lakhs-ten lakhs….so on. The respective groups are separated by commas to demarcate the periods.
  • International place value system: Similarly, the number system has the international system in which the first five positions from the left are the same, and then it continues with hundred thousand, million, ten million, hundred million, and so on. This system has three intervals in each period and it starts with the lowest place value at the right, as starting from the rightmost position, ones-tens-hundreds, thousand-ten thousand-hundred thousand, million-ten million-hundred millions… so on. The periods here are again separated by commas.

Every adjacent place has ten times greater value than its leftmost place. In lower grades, kids focus on learning the respective topic to gain a better understanding of the number system.

Importance of a place value chart

A place value chart makes it easy to understand the concept of place value. The same develops a better understanding as it is well known that visual effects are always better than theoretical ones. Cuemath explains the chart and the concept of numbers in a fun learning way.

The perfect understanding and clarity of topics result in a better understanding of the mathematical operations. A few concentrated days with the place value chart and appropriate explanation may work wonders in mathematics. The chart even makes the concept of a two-digit number, three-digit numbers, etc. easy. Different number systems have their own rules and place value charts. Cuemath has a link for the individual topics separately so that children can have full authority over the topic.
