Before, During, and After: A 4-Step Guide to Pool Renovations

Whether your home already has a swimming pool or you’re looking to build one, it’s a fantastic investment for any homeowner.

A swimming pool is a great way to set your home apart from the rest on the block, as this feature is more of a luxury than a necessity. So, if swimming pool renovations are on the horizon, here’s what to expect.

Pool Renovations: What to Expect Before, During, and After

An investment in a swimming pool is one of the best ways to increase the market value of your home. And the same goes for pool renovations. If your pool is a little outdated, there’s no better way to boost your market appeal with a swimming pool overhaul.
Pool Renovations What to Expect Before, During, and After

Here’s what to expect during the three major steps of the renovation process:

In the Beginning

At the start of the renovation project, it’s important to talk openly with your pool builders about your expectations. Ultimately, being open and honest about your budget and timeline will not only help to manage your own expectations, but your contractor’s too.

Bear in mind that very few outdoor projects ever run smoothly. It’s important to be realistic about unexpected delays, setbacks due to weather, material issues, deliveries, etc.

Step One: Draining the Pool

The first step is to drain your pool with a submersible pump. The hose generally leads out into a drain on the street.

This process takes six-12 hours, depending on the size of your pool. Once it’s drained, you’ll hear a loud slurping sound coming from the pump. Simply unplug the pump when it’s done.

Step Two: Chipping Out the Pool

In this second step, your pool is basically gutted of its coating. It’s chipped and primed, which usually takes about half a day’s work. Contractors will clean the gunite shell of the pool and remove all debris at the end of the day.

During the Renovation

During the Renovation
Step Three: Tiling

Once you’ve chosen your preferred tile for a modern, sleek feel, contractors apply the grouting, then apply the tiles. This can be a time-consuming process, depending on the size and amount of tiles you’ve chosen. It usually takes one-two days to complete this entire step.

Bear in mind that a plaster finish requires tiling of your swimming pool steps on the final day of the plastering process. I.e. the steps are saved for last.

Step Four: Surface Application

Once the tiling is complete, the rest of the pool surface is finished off with pebble and plaster. If you choose to forgo tiles completely, your pool surface is created this way.

Large trucks deliver the pebble and plaster mix and then pump it into your pool. Plaster artisans then finish off the surface with hand trowls for a smooth and even end-product. This process takes four-six hours.

If you choose a pebbled finish, the plaster is coated with an acid wash which then takes a few hours to set and dry.

After the Renovation

Once your swimming pool surfacing is complete, refilling must begin. This is an important step which homeowners must keep a close eye on.
After the Renovation
It’s very important that the pool is filled up to the skimmer opening or at least halfway up the tile line – and no less than this! Otherwise, water lines will form on the inside of the pool and throw off your aesthetic.

It’s best to keep this process slow and controlled -set aside 12-48 hours depending on the size and depth of your pool.

Once the pool is filled, chemicals will be added to the water to control pH levels and keep your pool sparkling blue. Keep in mind that plastered pools take longer to chemically balance versus pebbled pools.
