Choosing the vanity for your bathroom can be an exciting experience, but it can also be overwhelming! With so many styles, sizes and colors to choose from, you may find yourself wondering what you should really be looking for when selecting this essential piece of bathroom furniture. By following these 3 tips, you’ll know exactly what to look for when shopping around and be able to choose the perfect vanity with confidence!

Know How You Will Use Your Vanity

Consider what you’re planning to use your vanity for. Do you want it simply as a bench or will you be using it to put on makeup every day? Perhaps you’ll need drawers, more storage space and cabinet doors to store things like towels, toiletries and candles. If so, look at vanities that have these features. Another important question is where in your bathroom do you plan to put it? Will there be enough room between your bathtub or shower stall and other furniture?

Be sure to measure before shopping so that vanity fits perfectly into your bathroom space. Also, consider if you want something with a sink already attached or if you’d prefer to buy one separately. If purchasing separate sinks, think about whether they should match or coordinate with each other. You can also choose from different materials such as wood and metal. A vanity may be an investment piece, but don’t let that deter you from getting exactly what you want!

Keep the Lighting in Mind

Make sure your new vanity comes with adequate lighting. Natural lighting is best, but if you’re installing a new vanity in an old bathroom, take note of what kind of lighting already exists. Then look for vanity lights that are on par with your existing light source. If there is no light at all, think about upgrading to LED bulbs or installing wall-mounted sconces or pendants to add some ambient lighting. You don’t have to go overboard—just make sure you have enough light where you need it so that you can read instructions and see yourself clearly when putting on makeup.

For many people, applying makeup is one of those times they like to have ample lighting. But finding a mirror that gives you just enough natural light while also allowing you to adjust how much reflection you want from its surface isn’t easy.

To get around these problems, try looking for mirrors with LED panels behind them or find one with a sliding glass cover that lets more light through when needed (but can be closed off during other moments). And if possible, make sure your mirror is mounted on hinges so that it can easily be tilted up toward the ceiling or down toward your face without having to move out of position.

Know How Much Space You Have

First and foremost, you need to know how much space you have. You don’t want to get a vanity that doesn’t fit into your bathroom! Before making your purchase, be sure to measure your available space. A rule of thumb is that there should be at least 12 inches of clearance on all sides of your vanity—but don’t forget about clearance in front and behind. Allow extra room for drawers, handles, and plumbing lines (don’t forget to consider backsplashes if you are installing one!) Be aware that some vanities may not come with cabinets included; these can be added later if needed.
