5 Ways to Use More of Your Closet Space

It’s no secret that closet space is a hot commodity. What’s the purpose of having a beautiful home if you don’t have space to store all your stuff? Closet space is so important, in fact, that it’s one of the top 5 amenities preferred by both home buyers and renters alike. While it may be one of the major considerations you look for in a home, not all homes will have an abundance of closet space. If your closet space is limited, try out these 5 tips on how to maximize your space and store as much as possible.

{ 1 } Make Use of the Door

If you have a hinged door on your closet (rather than a sliding door or mirror), you can attach rods or even over the door hooks to create additional hanging space on the inside of your closet door. Depending on the method you choose as well as how much space you have, you might only be able to fit small items like necklaces or scarves. If you do have more space, though, it can be a great spot to hang jackets and vests.

{ 2 } Try Multi-level Hangers

Used up all your hangers but still have more clothes? This is a common problem with an easy solution – invest in multi-level hangers! Multi-level hangers allow you to hang multiple garments on the same hanger. This way you’re making use of your vertical space that usually goes unused. With more articles of clothing hanging on the same hanger, you will be able to fit double, even triple, the amount of clothing in your closet!

{ 3 } Add Additional Rods Below

When you think of a closet, typically you think of one rod across the top and possibly some shelving above it. However, many items of clothing (e.g. shirts, skirts, folded pants) don’t need that much vertical space. To make better use of your closet, add an additional rod below your existing one. Place shorter items below and longer items on top. While this will require some bending down when choosing what to wear, the space it saves is definitely worth the extra effort.

{ 4 } Shelving Can Be Your Best Friend

If you are one of the lucky few who has shelving in your closet, make sure you take advantage of this rare gift you’ve been given. Shelves are a great way to store things you can’t easily hang up (like shoes and hats) as well as a way of saving valuable hanging space by storing folded clothing (like pants and sweaters). Depending on the items that you are putting on your shelves, it may make sense to incorporate baskets or tubs. If you find, though, that baskets actually take up more space, there’s nothing wrong with piling things up on the shelves themselves. As long as you’re making use of your shelves, then you can’t go wrong.

{ 5 } The Timeless Classic – Downsize

If you’ve tried all these space saving tricks and still find yourself without enough room, it may be time to consider getting rid of some clothing. There’s only so much you can do with the space you’ve been given. If you’re not sure which items to get rid of, try the age-old trick of turning all your hangers one way. Once you wear an item, face the hanger in the opposite direction. Give yourself a specific amount of time before you assess. Once that amount of time passes, any hanger that is still facing the original direction is an item of clothing that you didn’t wear in the allotted amount of time. Since you didn’t wear it, it’s time to free up some space by donating or disposing of that article of clothing. Not sure whether your clothes should be donated or thrown out? Follow this guide.

With these space saving tricks, you’ll be able to make the most of your storage space no matter – regardless of how small it is! Whether you’ve got a microscopic space or a full walk-in closet, you can be sure that these tips will help you get organized and give you peace of mind. And if all else fails, it’s never too late to donate!
