How to Handle the First Interview
You need to have a meeting with your general contractor first before you start doing anything. First off, don’t ever sign anything yet, as this is an interview so you can get to know them. You need to ask questions about how many custom and manufactured homes they’ve built, find out how long they’ve been in business, how long he’s been around your neck of the woods, and find out how many homes he builds per year.
If any of these numbers seem too good to be true, then it just might be. Take plenty of notes so you can get all the info and check into it after the interview. You want to find out as much about the contractor as you can. If they do say they can’t get started for a little while, don’t think they’re not the right contractor, because their honesty is also a good trait.

Be sure you get references from your contractor, but do keep in mind, most contractors will only provide those who will give them a good name and a good review. The best way to avoid this is to ask for the last owner’s contact information (from the last house they built), and also find out at least a few names of people he’s built homes for in the last five years. You need to get a bid packet together so you can hand them to various contractors you interview and find out how much they are going to cost for the total project, but keep price and quality of the products they’ll use in mind. Also, make sure you find out about the subcontractors, make sure they’re licensed, if they shop local, and make sure your contractor is licensed and insured. Also be sure that all of their subcontractors are insured to make things out of your hands should there be any issues.
